Background of the Study

Student counseling services are essential in higher education institutions, providing psychological, academic, and career support to students. Counseling helps students manage stress, make informed academic decisions, and navigate personal challenges. However, many universities, including Federal University, Lafia, face significant challenges in delivering adequate counseling services due to a shortage of trained counselors, limited resources, and the stigma associated with seeking help (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2024). As student populations grow, the demand for counseling services continues to outpace supply, leading to inadequate support for students experiencing academic or emotional distress (Adebayo & Salisu, 2023).

With the advancement of digital technology, online counseling systems have emerged as viable solutions for bridging the gap in mental health and academic support services in universities. These platforms leverage web-based technologies to provide students with access to professional counseling services remotely, ensuring privacy, accessibility, and timely intervention (Olawale & Musa, 2023). Online counseling eliminates the need for physical presence, reducing the stigma associated with in-person counseling sessions and encouraging more students to seek help (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023).

At Federal University, Lafia, students face multiple challenges, including academic pressure, financial difficulties, and personal issues that impact their well-being and academic performance. The absence of an efficient and accessible counseling system means that many students either do not receive the help they need or resort to informal sources of support that may not be reliable. Traditional face-to-face counseling services at the university are often overstretched, leading to long wait times and inadequate counseling sessions. The lack of an organized online platform for counseling further exacerbates the problem, as students may not know where or how to seek professional guidance (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024).

To address these challenges, this study aims to develop an online counseling system specifically designed for students at Federal University, Lafia. The system will provide confidential, real-time support for students, connecting them with qualified counselors through text, audio, or video consultations. By integrating AI-powered chatbots, scheduling features, and secure data storage, the online counseling system will enhance accessibility, efficiency, and the overall mental health and academic support available to students.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Lafia, lacks an efficient and accessible counseling system that meets the needs of its growing student population. Many students experience stress, anxiety, and academic difficulties but do not receive timely professional support due to the limitations of the university’s traditional counseling services. The shortage of trained counselors and the stigma associated with seeking help further discourage students from utilizing available services (Adebayo & Salisu, 2024).

Existing counseling services at the university operate in a face-to-face format, which is often ineffective due to long wait times, limited service hours, and a lack of awareness among students. Moreover, the absence of an online counseling platform means that students who are hesitant to seek in-person help have no alternative means of receiving guidance and support. The inefficiencies in the current system contribute to increased cases of academic failure, mental health challenges, and emotional distress among students (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024).

Given the increasing reliance on digital solutions for mental health and academic support, there is a pressing need for an online counseling system that ensures students can easily access professional help. Such a system will provide a confidential and flexible platform for students to engage with counselors, schedule sessions, and receive personalized support tailored to their needs. This study, therefore, aims to develop an online counseling system that enhances the accessibility, effectiveness, and efficiency of student support services at Federal University, Lafia.
